The towpath, a hundred kilometres of softness
From one bank to the other, the Mayenne towpath is laid out over about a hundred kilometres, from Mayenne town to Angers. You walk or cycle effortlessly, past old mills and moored barges. The locks, often flowered and inhabited, punctuate the trip. A date by the water, short or long, always leaves a soft memory.
Locks and flowered villages
The locks of Montgiroux, Houssay and Origné are small destinations in themselves: tidy gardens, colourful boats, lock houses with blue slates. Daon with its beautifully restored quay, La Jaille-Yvon perched on its slope, offer perfect coffee breaks. You sit without a plan, and that is often where first dates take their time best.
Château-Gontier and the port of Mayenne
In the south of the department, Château-Gontier displays its old centre around the Romanesque Saint-Jean church, in the fine spirit of a small art town. To the north, Mayenne town keeps its medieval castle on a rocky spur and a lively river port. On Lyad, Mayenne members share their locks and favourite walks: it is up to you to find someone to go upstream with.
